Surgical Masks (EN 14683)

A surgical mask is medical rated and is manufactured as per standard EN 14683. This type of mask is designed to prevent the wearer from spreading droplets into the air.

It also protects the wearer from droplets produced by a person directly in front of them. However, depending on the circumstances, it does not protect from inhaling the very small particles suspended in the air that potentially carry a virus.

There are three different types of surgical masks with the following ratings for filtering and splash - resistance.

  • Type I: bacteria filtering effectiveness > 95%.
  • Type II: bacteria filtering effectiveness > 98%.
  • Type IIR: bacteria filtering effectiveness > 98% and splash-resistant.

Trimbio offer Type IIR masks in packs of 10 or boxes of 50. SKU -PP105 or PP106

FFP Respirator masks (EN149)

An FFP mask (“Filtering Face Particles”) is an individual respirator protection mask and is manufactured as per standard EN149. The mask

is designed to protect the wearer against the inhalation of both droplets and particles that can be suspended in the air (aerosols).

When worn this type of mask is more restrictive than a surgical mask (heat-related discomfort, breathing resistance). However it protects from inhaling infectious pathogens.

Vented to none Vented?

Vented masks allow air to be expelled via a one way valve, however this valve will allow pathogens to be expelled when worn and therefore only gives rated protection in one direction.  None vented masks are more uncomfortable over a period of time but give rated protection for the wearer and those near them.

There are three different types of FFP masks with the following ratings.

  • FFP1 masks which filter at least 80% of aerosols (inward leakage < 22%);
  • FFP2 masks which filter at least 94% of aerosols (inward leakage < 8%);
  • FFP3 masks which filter at least 99% of aerosols (inward leakage < 2%).

Trimbio offer FFP2 masks in packs of 5. SKU - PP110
