What is Tecar therapy?
Tecar therapy (Transfer of Energy Capacitive and Resistive) uses radiofrequency energy to generate heat within tissue from the inside out, rather than applying heat from the surface. It is used to support circulation, ease pain, and encourage tissue repair in musculoskeletal conditions.
What is the difference between capacitive and resistive mode?
Capacitive mode passes energy more easily through tissue with higher water content, such as muscle, and is generally used for softer tissue. Resistive mode concentrates energy in areas of higher electrical resistance, such as tendons, ligaments, and bone, making it better suited to denser structures.
How is Tecar therapy different from ultrasound or shortwave diathermy?
All three generate therapeutic heat in tissue, but by different means. Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves, shortwave diathermy uses an electromagnetic field, and Tecar passes a radiofrequency current directly between the device and the patient's body through a return electrode, which allows for continuous contact and real-time adjustment during treatment.
What conditions is Tecar therapy used for?
Tecar therapy is commonly used for joint and tendon pain, muscle strains, chronic pain, post-injury rehabilitation, and circulation problems, including lymphatic drainage.
Is Tecar therapy the same as the 448kHz devices sold for beauty and aesthetic use?
No. Aesthetic RF/Tecar-style devices marketed for skin tightening or fat reduction are built to different standards and specifications than clinical Tecar units used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Our Zimmer Thermo TK unit is a clinical-grade device built for practitioner use.
What training is needed to use a Tecar unit?
