Application of taping and strapping by professionals

Our physiotherapy-qualified product advisors work with this range every day, helping clinics and sports teams choose the right tape for the job. Taping is applied in the clinic and in sports for several different purposes to immobilise an injured joint, to correct the movement pattern, to reduce swelling, and to restore confidence in an athlete that allows them to return to activity. Regardless of whether it is termed sports strapping tape, sport tape, or just taping an ankle before the game, the purpose remains the same.

Physiotherapists and sports therapists use rigid zinc oxide taping to provide non-stretchable support on joints like ankles and wrists. Kinesiology taping (or kinetic taping) functions in another way, as it moves along with the skin to support muscles while exercising. Clinics usually have both types of tapes available for different injuries, along with under-wrap and pre-tape sprays.

Kinesiology tape vs zinc oxide strapping: what to consider

Kinesiology tape and elastic therapeutic tape are designed to stretch with the body, making them suited to muscle support, swelling management, and postural correction where some movement needs to be preserved. Zinc oxide tape and fixation tapes in general are more suited for joint stability, especially where there is a need to immobilise a certain motion, such as taping a sprained ankle before exercise.

Cohesive tape and EAB (elastic adhesive bandage) are located in between the two extremes, providing support but with a slightly elastic nature compared to the non-stretch variety. The selection is determined by the kind of injury being treated, the type of physical activity being performed, and the amount of movement that the practitioner wants to facilitate.

Frequently Asked Questions On Taping and Strapping

Kinesiology Tape vs. Athletic Tape

Kinesiology tape, also referred to as kinetic tape, is stretchy and follows the muscle movement. This type of tape is appropriate for support without limiting motion. Athletic tape includes zinc oxide tape among others, which are rigid and therefore offer joint support without being stretchable.

Can I use sports strapping tape for everyday support, not just sport?

Yes. While it's called sports strapping tape, the same rigid and elastic tapes are used in general physio and rehab settings for joint support, post-injury care and postural correction, not just on the sports field.

Do you supply tape for taping and strapping courses?

Yes. trimbio supplies physio tape, kinesiology tape and combi packs to training providers and educational institutions running taping and strapping courses. Contact our team for bulk or course-specific quantities.

Is EAB tape the same as cohesive bandage?

EAB (elastic adhesive bandage) and cohesive tapes are closely related. Both offer support with some flexibility, sitting between rigid zinc oxide strapping and fully elastic kinesiology tape.

Do you stock tape for animal and equine therapy?

Yes. Alongside our human taping and strapping range, we supply tape suited to equine and animal therapy use. See our equine therapy range for more.
