Ultrasound gel and conductive gel used by practitioners

Ultrasound gel and conductive gel serve different purposes, although practitioners may use the terms interchangeably. An ultrasound gel acts as an acoustic couplant, which facilitates transmission of sound waves from treatment heads to tissues through ultrasound therapy. On the other hand, a conductive gel, also known as electrode gel or conductivity gel, enhances electrical contact between the electrodes and the skin in TENS, EMG, or muscle stimulation.

Regardless of the term used, the ultra sound gel, gel for ultrasound, or ultrasound jelly refers to the same clear and water-based coupling agent.

Difference between ultrasound gel and conductive gel

They are both water-based and non-oily but are formulated with differences that depend on their purpose:

  • The ultrasound gel is designed for acoustic transmission with ultrasound therapy heads and diagnostic probes (Aqua and Cytolax).
  • The conductive gel is specifically formulated to reduce impedance at the skin electrode interface so that TENS, interferential and muscle stim units can have a clean signal.

Bottle sizes and cost per use

Our gels come in 250ml bottles, 1L bottles and 5L (5000gr) cubitainers. For a clinic running ultrasound or electrotherapy daily, the larger cubitainer works out considerably cheaper per application, and pairs with the empty 260ml refill bottle so front-of-room stations aren't tied up with a bulky container. Smaller bottles suit lower-volume clinics or mobile practitioners who need something portable.

Ordering for clinics and NHS Trusts

trimbio supplies physiotherapy clinics, sports therapy practices, NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers with ultrasound and conductive gel as a routine consumable order. Orders over £75 ex VAT qualify for free standard delivery, dispatched within 2 working days. If you're setting up a new treatment room or restocking across multiple sites, contact the team for bulk pricing.

Check out our Electrotherapy Accessories line for electrodes and leads to use with your gel, or shop our Ultrasound Therapy line if you are building up a treatment room from the ground up.

FAQs

For what purpose is ultrasound gel required?

Ultrasound gel is used as an intermediary medium that transmits sound waves from the ultrasound device probe and the patient's skin, since air cannot conduct these waves. It's a standard consumable for any clinic running ultrasound therapy or diagnostic ultrasound.

What's the difference between ultrasound gel and conductive or electrode gel?

The ultrasound gel has been made for transmitting acoustic energy via ultrasound probes, but the conductive gel (or conducting gel, electrode gel) has been made specifically to provide good electrical conductivity for the electrodes in TENS, EMG and muscle stimulators. There are some universal gels that can be used for both types of devices.

Are doppler gel and ultrasound gel the same?

Yes, they are usually the same clear gel substance that is water-based, and both are used to ensure acoustic connection between the probe and the skin. However, if you are looking to purchase gel for Doppler, it's best to either ask on the website about the suitability for your device or contact our team.

Does trimbio stock hypoallergenic conductive gel?

For checking the availability of hypoallergenic conductive gel, kindly contact the team for further information.

Is warming of ultrasound gel necessary prior to its use?

No. Standard ultrasound and conductive gels are designed for use at room temperature. Some practitioners choose to warm gel slightly for patient comfort, but this isn't required for the gel to work effectively.

What sizes does trimbio's gel range come in?

Our range covers 250ml and 1L bottles plus 5L (5000gr) cubitainers, along with empty refill bottles for topping up from a bulk container.
