Uses of cold packs for practitioners and patients
An ice bag is the most basic item in any medical facility and first-aid box. One-time-use instant ice packs are squeezed or snapped in an internal bag to activate and are commonly stored in case of an emergency for treating bruises or sports injuries where there is no access to a freezer. However, reusable and cooling gel packs are stored in the freezer or fridge and can be used repetitively. These packs are the best choice for rehabilitation, home, or clinic use with continuous patient flow.
Gel packs are common among physiotherapists and sports therapists as a cool-down pack that is used in and out of treatment sessions, usually in conjunction with a belt-like holster.
Instant ice packs vs reusable gel packs: what to consider
Instant cold packs are grab-and-go. No preparation is required, no refrigeration is required, and there is no chance of leaking from continued use, thus making them ideal for use on the sporting field, in first aid kits, and in any situation where immediate cooling must occur. Once activated, they cannot be reused.
Reusable gel packs, including Theraflex ice packs and our reusable hot and cold pack range, cost less over time and mould closely to the body, which helps with backs, shoulders and joints. They do need a freezer or fridge nearby, so they suit clinics, gyms and homes rather than pitch-side kit bags.
Some ranges, like our reusable hot and cold packs, do both jobs in one product. These can be warmed for stiffness or chilled for swelling, which is useful where a clinic or household wants one product to cover both needs.
Hot pack or cold pack: selecting the right treatment
Cold treatment is generally linked to the initial phase of the injury where there is mainly swelling and inflammation. On the other hand, heat treatment is generally linked to the muscles that have become stiff and tight. This isn't medical advice for a specific injury; practitioners typically make this call based on presentation and patient history, and our hot pack range covers the other side of that decision.

Frequently Asked Questions On Cold Packs and Sprays
What is an ice pack, and how do they work?
An ice pack is an appliance which is placed on the skin to decrease swelling, numb the pain and minimise the inflammation of the injured part of the body. Instant ice packs cool through the chemical reaction occurring inside a sealed pack by crushing it. Reusable ice packs and cooling gel packs are chilled in a freezer beforehand and stay cold for a set period once removed.
What is the difference between an instant ice pack and a cold pack?
An instant ice pack can be used only once and requires no preparation prior to use. Reusable cold packs, including cooling gel packs and Theraflex ice packs, are chilled in advance and can be used repeatedly, which works out cheaper for regular or clinical use.
How long must a cold pack remain on an injury?
A cold pack is typically applied for short durations of time, with intervals in between to prevent skin damage. A cold pack should always be covered with something before being placed on your skin, and you must follow the instructions that come with the pack, as the duration varies according to different packs.
Is there a hot and cold pack that is capable of giving both types of treatment?
Yes. Hot and cold packs, including our gel packs, can be heated using hot water or a microwave, while others can be cooled using a freezer. This makes them a practical option for clinics or households that need one product to cover both.
Do you supply cold packs and ice packs to NHS Trusts and clinics?
