Selecting an appropriate medium for massage: oil, lotion, cream or wax

The appropriate medium for massage is dependent on the elements of glide, absorption, and the nature of the massage being performed. Oils provide the best glide and are ideal for massage techniques involving fluid motions; however, oils tend to leave the skin and towels greasy. Lotions absorb faster and are ideal for general and sports massage since they do not form a thick layer on the skin. Creams fall in between the two extremes with more resistance and control and are ideal for myofascial massage and deep tissue massage.

Most clinics keep more than one medium on hand. A sports massage cream for pre-event work is a different tool from a light massage lotion used for general treatment, and having both covers more of the day's caseload.

Sports massage cream and lotion: requirements by massage therapists

In case of sports therapy, the massage medium should last for a longer period of time before it has to be reapplied. As for the cream for massage, it should provide some kind of resistance while allowing penetration into deep tissue and not pulling on the skin, while the massage lotion should work well in quick turnover between clients. Non-greasy and easily washed-off formulas are important for that reason as well because couches and towels are constantly used in such an environment.

There is no harm in stocking hypoallergenic and scent-free products, like those of the Naqi brand, in your clinic.

Brand highlights: Naqi, Fisiocrem, Songbird, Chemodol and Baselin

  • Naqi recovery gel and the wider Naqi massage lotion range (Sport, Ultra, Ultra Plus and Light) are designed to be non-greasy and hypoallergenic, with different formulations for different massage pressures and skin types.
  • Fisiocrem is a natural, paraben-free rub commonly used for muscle and ligament care following activity or exercise, and it's suitable alongside other physiotherapy treatments.
  • Songbird massage wax comes in several scent and strength options (Orange Spice, Relaxation, Sport, Lavender, Unscented, plus a vegan range and a fascial release wax), giving practitioners flexibility between relaxation-focused and sports-focused sessions.
  • Chemodol massage oil, alongside Chemoderm and Chemovine, covers a general-purpose oil range, with Chemovine formulated as hypoallergenic for more sensitive skin.
  • Baselin massage milk is developed specifically for naturally greasy or moist skin, rinsing off easily with water. It's a practical choice for cross-fibre work and manipulation where a standard oil or lotion might sit too heavily on the skin.

FAQs

What is the most effective massage oil for sports massage?

Lighter oils and lotions that have good glide and fast absorption usually perform better for sports massage because the massage is generally shorter and more specific than relaxation massage. Chemodol massage oil and the Naqi Sport Massage Lotion are both formulated with this kind of work in mind.

What's the difference between massage oil, lotion, cream and wax?

Oil gives the longest glide but sits heaviest on the skin. Lotion absorbs faster with less residue, suiting general and sports massage. Cream sits between the two, offering more resistance for deep tissue and myofascial techniques. Wax is the firmest option, often used specifically for fascial release work where grip matters more than slip.

What is Naqi recovery gel used for?

Naqi recovery gel is used during and after massage to support the skin through repeated mechanical handling. It's hypoallergenic and rinses off easily with water, making it practical for regular clinical use.

Do you stock Songbird massage wax in different scents?

Yes. Songbird massage wax is available in several options, including Orange Spice, Relaxation, Sport, Lavender and Unscented, plus a vegan range and a dedicated fascial release wax.

Is Baselin massage milk suitable for oily or greasy skin?

Yes. Baselin massage milk is specifically formulated for naturally greasy or moist skin, and it's non-greasy and easy to rinse off, making it a good option for cross-fibre and manipulation work where other mediums can feel too heavy.
